Philly Chit Chat: Bellevue Celebrated it's 21st Birthday

The Sporting Club at the Bellevue celebrating it's 21st Birthday

The Sporting Club at the Bellevue celebrating it's 21st Birthday on January 21, 2010. The party was a resounding success with well dressed peeps, mostly members of the Club and the well healed of Philadelphia rubbing elbow to elbow, especially in the hallway where the food lay in wait. There were several bars in the narrow hallway, and a strategically placed one in center court on the basket ball court. It was my understanding that this was the first time they held a party in this room, I felt guilty walking on the floor and suggested to a few people that maybe we should remove our shoes. They assured me the floor would be fine.

The Sporting Club is part of The Bellevue complex which includes the Park Hyatt Philadelphia, restaurants XIX and The Palm, and exclusive shops such as Tiffany & Co.,Nicole Miller, Williams-Sonoma, Origins and Teuscher Chocolates as well as offices for the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, Tierney Company and Pennsylvania Realty Investment Trust. It’s a great place to work out, dine, shop and stay right in the heart of Philadelphia’s downtown.

Philadelphia Style Magazine Publisher and now he's adding Washington DC's Capitol to his resume, John Colabelli. I hear he will moving his operations down there and running both magazines from that office, but he's not disappearing for good as he will be here two or three times a week; with Sabrina Tamburino Thorne who's jetting down to Jamaica this weekend for a destination wedding.

This is the Ritz of the Philadelphia gyms. Basketball court, pool, squash, a boxing area, ballet room, several group fitness rooms, a yoga studio, an indoor track, a large workout floor with state-of-the-art machines, a fleet of treadmills, each with their own television.

Starpulse: Bradley Cooper is a Philadelphia Style cover star

Spotlight On Bradley Cooper

Bradley Cooper has been acting for an entire decade but he's just starting to get his well-deserved fame. It seems you can't open a tabloid without coming across his name and who he is allegedly linked to. Although he claims to be just friends with Jennifer Aniston, pictures of their "date" were plastered all over the magazine covers and they are still a hot topic in celebrity gossip. Did he blow her over, is she just not that into him, do we really care? Born in Philadelphia, Bradley was Georgetown educated before studying at the Actors Studio Drama School at New School University in New York City. While working on a few small theater projects, he landed roles on Sex And The City, The Beat and Treks in a Wild World. He then appeared as Ben in the hilarious, summer camp flick Wet Hot American Summer. Bradley has appeared in various television shows such as Law and Order, Alias, Nip/Tuck and Kitchen Confidential. His good looks and likeability have helped launch his movie career as he went to star in The Wedding Crashers, Failure to Launch, Yes Man, and He's Just Not That Into You. What seemed to put Bradley on the map as well as on the cover of all the tabloids was this summer's box office hit, The Hangover. Bradley played Phil Wenneck who along with his fellow groomsmen took the groom-to-be on a wild bachelor party adventure in Las Vegas. One of the funniest movies of the year, Bradley gained major recognition for this role, surprisingly. Plans for The Hangover 2 are already underway. The fame hasn't greatly affected Bradley as he stays humbled. In a recent interview with Philadelphia Style magazine, Bradley admitted that he can go unrecognizable in his hometown and is still working his way up the actor food chain. It just shows you that even the most famous actors have to face rejection. Bradley told the Advocate Magazine, "I actually auditioned to play James Franco's role in Milk -- I really wanted that -- but oh, my God, Franco just killed it." Although he was reportedly beat out by Ryan Reynolds to play the Green Lantern, Bradley has been confirmed to play Templeton "Face" Peck in the forthcoming The A-Team film.

He doesn't seem to have any problem getting rejected in the dating field. After his 4 month marriage to actress Jennifer Esposito, Bradley has been linked to Jennifer Aniston, Renee Zellweger, Lake Bell and Cameron Diaz and has been called a "player" by a few tabloids. Currently filming Valentine's Day in Los Angeles with Julia Roberts, Bradley's next film, All About Steve with Sandra Bullock hits theaters September 4th.

Philly Chit Chat: Philadelphia Style 2009 Hot List Party!

July 17, 2009

Oh what a night. For me covering the Philly Style Magazine "Hot List" party is an amazing experience because at last years event I barely knew anyone except for Sgt. Ray (Single and still looking girls, I know you're curious some of you do searches) and Brett Rosenblum (off to some exotic place). There were no Arthur Kade's, or Sabrina Tamburino's in my life at that time, certainly no Renee Freeman who just exudes a sweetness and kindness every time I see her and many of you who are always so kind, especially with your prayers for my sister and of the NBC10/Fusion "Be a 10 in 10 Weeks" Biggest Loser Challenge.

Philadelphia Style Magazine's Hot List Party-

PHILADELPHIA STYLE MAGAZINE'S 2009 HOT LIST PARTY kicked off with a bang at The Crystal Tea Room in the old Wanamaker Building on Thursday night. Philadelphia Style Magazine has delivered more than ten years of the latest news in the worlds of fashion, travel, philanthropy, entertainment, home décor, architecture, and real estate to the sophisticated readers in the metropolitan Philadelphia area. The magazine's biggest supporters came out to show their thanks to Philly Style for helping put Philly on the map.

Once you walked in through the swinging doors of the historic building you couldn’t stop to notice all of the beautiful women dressed to the nines. As you approached the Crystal Tea Room, there were some employees from Philly Style to greet you at the entrance, and a large Philly Style banner and red carpet with all of the who’s who in Philadelphia getting snapped up by photographers and paparazzi.

Philadelphia’s VIP’s celebrated with a night of food, live music by CTO who played some great Michael Jackson hits, cocktails and lots of dancing and fun. Some of the big wigs included Monica Malpass, anchor at Channel 6 WPVI, Marshall Harris, anchor at Comcast Sportsnet, John Bolaris, meteorologist at FOX 29 News as well as many other TV media personalities. One of the crowd favorites was Sharon Pinkenson, Executive Director of the Greater Philadelphia Film Office.

Many people were interested to find out from her where Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, and Jack Nicholson are shooting in Philly. Rumor has it that Jack Nicholson has been spending a lot of quality time around Rittenhouse Square. A source says he’s been frequenting Stephen Starr’s Parc Rittenhouse while in town.

The party had the best restaurants in Philly like Table 31, and 10 Arts to name a couple showcasing their finest foods and mixed drinks. The Cherry-tini’s from 10 Arts were going down fast amongst the party goers. There was an exclusive casino set up in the room by Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa. All proceeds from that benefited the Borgata Heart & Soul Foundation. There was a lot more dancing at the after party at Zee Bar. The owners of Dusk, a hot new club at Caesar’s Atlantic City had their own private table at Zee.

All in all, the Philadelphia Style party proved after 10 years that Philly is one hot fashionable city of celebrities and local Philadelphians who love this city like they love their sports teams.

With Philadelphia Fashion Week just around the corner in October, Philly’s Style’s party next year may just get bigger. And after this blowout event—something better is even harder to imagine☺

Cover Awards: Drew Barrymore

In case you’ve been wondering where in the world Drew Barrymore has been, Niche Media’s Gotham Magazine has the answer.

She secluded herself for 3 months to prepare for her role as “Little Edie” in HBO’s upcoming Grey Gardens. Drew said “I didn’t speak on the phone or watch television or read the newspaper and BlackBerry or speak to my family or one friend for three months”.

Cover Awards: Cole Hamels is a cover star

Cole Hamels rehashes to Niche Media’s Philadelphia Style magazine about a recent media storm that he created when he was bated by a New York sports- talk show radio host into calling the New York Mets ‘choke artists’.
Hamels insists that “I didn’t even realize what I did until I was getting calls from people telling me that it was on [ESPN's] SportsCenter.

I’m not the guy who wants to be in the papers because of what he says” Hamels tells Philadelphia Style for his March cover story. From now on, he adds, he’ll let his play on the field do the talking.

That’s good news.

Where recession recedes
Luxury is bright-hot at the city's new upscale clubs, prosperity just around the corner in pricey private rooms.

By A.D. Amorosi

On a daily basis, Americans are reminded that things are not good.
We're told that the economy is on the downswing, that mortgages need to be saved, and that if we're not necessarily headed for another Great Depression, we should be ready for a bad recession.

That doesn't sound like news that would make you break out the Cristal.
Yet this city's club scene is having its own boom, one geared toward pricey hangouts and luxurious surroundings, where drinks aren't cheap, VIP areas are roped off, and the air of exclusivity wafts as elegantly as premium perfume.
Here's what's opened in just the last few months: Pearl, a two-story lounge/restaurant at 19th and Chestnut; Vango, a dance club/dining lounge on South 18th that boasts a $450,000 fiber-optic chandelier; and G Lounge, a club on South 17th with VIP access and $350 bottle service.

And there's more to come, straight down Chestnut. Union Trust, a steak house/lounge housed in the Jack Kellmer jewelers building at Seventh Street, and Del Frisco's at the Grande at 15th Street, are supposed to open by late spring.
None of these places are joints where dollar PBRs will be served or backward baseball caps will be allowed. So how can this city's recession-minded majority afford these places?

In the minds (and pockets) of the owners of these new spaces where exclusivity is key, they're not supposed to.

"This is a high-end product where, when you pay for a drink, you'll see and feel what you're paying for," said Pearl owner Brett Perloff, a lawyer and a promoter.
"I don't know that it's the best time to open, what with America heading for recession," he added. "But this is the product which I'm an expert at. This is what I do and wanted to open. Surely those other venues feel likewise."
Diaa Sawan does. He was looking for his Vango to offer a posh brand of nightlife with top-notch bottle service and Japanese delicacies, topped by an immense roof deck. "I wanted to offer an experience with the best things life had to offer," Sawan said, "to the best patrons."

With $14 cocktails, bottles going for $150 to $350, and a price tag estimated at $2.5 million, G Lounge bucks the recessionary trend.
These sorts of posh hot spots have been opened before when times were good - such as the original Mansion in Rittenhouse and Suede in Old City - but failed as luxe hangouts due to lack of support. So why should they succeed now, when times are tougher?
To G Lounge owner Mark Marek, a West Philadelphia native who came to nightlife entrepreneurship after working in the luxury-goods business for Govberg Jewelers, there's no time like now to build Philly finery.

"Philly is 20 years behind," he said. "If you compare Philly to any other major metropolitan area - yeah, we're definitely that behind. Maybe more."
Marek meant that it's only now that Philadelphia is getting high-rise towers in Rittenhouse Square and tiny boutiques lining not only Walnut Street but other areas of Center City. People saw opportunity in 2007 when luxury enterprises such as 10 Rittenhouse, 1706 Rittenhouse and the Parc Rittenhouse, as well as the new Comcast building, broke ground or finished.

Still, Marek noted that when Paris Hilton came to Philadelphia to promote her movie, "she took the first limo out of here." And Marilyn Manson was supposed to visit G while in town for his recent concerts, "but his press people texted me at 1:45 a.m. reminding us that Philly closes at 2. And that's when celebs are out."

Marek blamed the city's developers for the lack of hot spots, along with a Philly tendency to remain loyal to the old guard.

"There isn't any turnover," he said. "Georges Perrier's been here forever and he'll continue to be. Same with 32 Degrees and Shampoo. Once you open shop, unless you're terrible, you'll stay the same concept indefinitely."

But at a time when the economy is on such a downturn, how can these luxe lounges continue to percolate? As someone with experience in the luxury-goods business, Marek knows that the rich stay rich - or get richer.

"When it comes to the high end, you're pretty much insulated from perceived downturns in the economy," he said. "The wealthy don't care. When gas prices go up, it doesn't affect them. At all. And if you deliver a consistent, quality product, they'll support you."

High-end Realtor Laurie Phillips confirmed this belief. Her recent sales have included a condo in Old City 108 for $2.75 million; a Delancey Street townhouse on 18th for $2.375 million; and numerous Rittenhouse Square penthouses for $2 million to $3 million.

"Companies such as Comcast and Unisys are bringing in a lot of businessmen who want the convenience of location to both D.C. and N.Y.C.," she said.
Jason Binn is counting on that. The founder and chief executive officer of Niche Media - publisher of lifestyle and fashion magazines such as Gotham, Hamptons, Los Angeles Confidential, and Aspen Peak, aimed at professionals with incomes of $250,000 or more - bought Philadelphia Style from its owner, Dana Spain-Smith. The first issue under the new ownership comes out in May.
"This is a top-five market and for us, it's a priority for Niche to be here," says Binn, who had scouted Style since 2000. "There's always been luxury here and those who wanted it. It's just at a head now."

Expect Style on Binn's watch to have the same mix of lifestyle articles about the rich and famous that his other magazines do, coupled with events that connect advertisers and patrons.

"There is a group of Philadelphians with tremendous earning power, financial security, and tremendous desire to have the best of the best," he said. "People will always want that escape, that connection to what we call the good life."
That's true for Peter DelloBuono, 50, a Center City pharmacist whose tastes lean toward pricey suits by Paul Smith and shoes by Cesare Paciotti. He sees hitting sophisticated clubs as a necessity, not a luxury.

"If you're dressing the way that I like to dress, wouldn't you prefer to be in a similarly appointed atmosphere?" he said. "People look and act more refined in places like that."

Realtor Phillips has noticed a few bumps. Buyers looking to purchase some of her properties are having difficulty getting loans if they do not have a sufficient credit score ("over 740," she said). Then again, a lot of buildings, like Washington Square's Ayer Building, are considered investments. And investment is what the nightclub owners are doing in the first place.
"The economy is cyclical," Perloff said. "If right now isn't the best time, maybe two years from now will be. It's an investment."

Inquirer: Niche Media buys out Philadelphia Style Magazine

Inqlings: A glossy Niche for Phila. Style

By Michael Klein

Inquirer Columnist

Dana Spain-Smith is selling Philadelphia Style mag because she wants to devote her time and energy to her pet charity, Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society.
Today, she will introduce new owner Jason Binn to her staff.

New York-based Binn, 39, is the hobnobbing CEO of Niche Media LLC, which publishes such oversize glossies as Aspen Peak, Gotham, Hamptons, Los Angeles Confidential, Boston Common, and Capitol File.

He is paying an undisclosed sum for DLG Media Holdings LLC, which publishes the seven-times-a-year Philly Style as well as online pubs DC Style and AC Confidential.

Are you wealthy enough to read the new Style?

Niche's mags target readers with household incomes of $200,000-plus, $1 million in liquid assets, and $1 million-plus homes. Style will be no different, Binn says. Staffers, including publisher John M. Colabelli and editor Sarah Schaffer, have been told their jobs are safe.

Niche's first issue will be May. Colabelli, who worked for the Binn-founded Ocean Drive in Miami, founded Philly Style in 1997.

Philly Style magazine is sold

By Michael Klein

INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

Philadelphia Style magazine, a glossy focusing on lifestyle and fashion, will get a new owner.

Shortly after 5 p.m. today, Dana Spain-Smith told staffers at her South Philadelphia office that she was selling the business because she wishes to devote her time and energy to her pet charity, Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society.

She will introduce Jason Binn to her staff tomorrow.

Binn, 39, is chief executive of Niche Media LLC, which publishes such oversize, pretty glossies as Aspen Peak, Gotham, Hamptons, Los Angeles Confidential, Boston Common and Capitol File.

Staffers, including publisher John M. Colabelli and editor Sarah Schaffer, were told that their jobs remain.

In an interview today, Binn declined to disclose what he paid for DLG Media Holdings LLC, which publishes Philly Style as well as online publications DC Style and ACConfidential.com.

Spain-Smith, 38, also declined to name the price.

Both parties said they had been talking for a few years. Rumor of an impending deal was first reported last week on the blog Philebrity.com.
The first Binn-published issue will be May.

Binn said Philly Style would maintain its circulation of 70,000 copies per issue and its seven-times-a-year publication schedule.

Style, already positioned toward upper-income readers, now will be targeted at the super-affluent - readers with household incomes of $250,000-plus and $1 million in liquid assets, as well as homes worth $1 million-plus, Binn said.
Niche Media frequently stages celebrity events, which it covers in its publications.

Style will be no different, he said.
Current publisher Colabelli, inspired by Binn's Ocean Drive magazine in Miami, founded Philly Style in 1997.

Spain-Smith, who became the magazine's CEO in 2001, bought out Colabelli in 2004. Spain-Smith hopes to expand PAWS beyond its shelter in Old City.
"We'll be very passionate in celebrating the people who make Philadelphia special," said Binn, whose wife, Haley, lived in Philadelphia.

Terrence Howard is the cover story of the summer 2008 issue

July 24, 2008

Terrence Howard is excited to go on tour when his CD comes out in September. Howard says he'll play Philly in October as part of the tour for his debut album.

We caught up with the "Iron Man" and "Hustle & Flow" actor at a Tuesday-night party by Philadelphia Style at 10 Arts, chef Eric Ripert's new restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton. Howard's the cover story of the magazine's new issue. Howard, who lives in Lafayette Hill, addressed the crowd before his first single "Love Makes You Beautiful" was played.

The actor caught up with Jim Ellis, longtime swim coach and employee of the city's Department of Recreation. In the movie "Pride," Howard portayed Ellis, whose longtime pool at the Marcus Foster Recreation Center was recently closed. Ellis now trains swimmers at Kelly Pool in Fairmount Park and at LaSalle University's pool.

Chef Ripert says he's enjoying Philadelphia and loves the hour-long commute by Acela from New York. We asked Ripert whether viewers of Bravos' "Top Chef" could expect to see him next season and he cited a confidentiality clause he signed for the show indicating he could be sued for up to $2 million if he discusses it. "I don't have that kind of money," Ripert said, begging off discussing the program with us. Ripert was hanging out with BJ Spencer, who, along with husband Craig, owns the Ritz-Carlton and co-owns the Philadelphia Soul.

He told us the couple was leaving today for New Orleans, where the Soul play Sunday afternoon in the Arena Bowl XXII. "3 o'clock on ABC," Spencer shouted, unable to contain her excitement about the team's amazing season.
Clothing designer Reuben Harley was at the party to give some of his new R.Harley collection to Howard. Harley has slimmed down, from jogging on Kelly Drive, and may soon shrink out of his longtime nickname Big Rube.

Philadelphia Style magazines celebrated its relaunch

Dan Gross: Nutter: I paid that 17 bucks

By Dan Gross

"I GAVE HIM a twenty, and he gave me three dollars back," Mayor Nutter told us Friday night in reference to Tom Caramanico.

Caramanico, board chair of the Friends of Independence National Historical Park, wrote in his group's newsletter that Nutter owed his group $17 from a January ceremony dedicating People's Plaza on Independence Mall. While Nutter spoke with Caramanico, who presented a $268,983 check to the Independence Visitor Center Corporation, Nutter said: "Tom, I'll give you the $17 and you make this check an even $269,000." Caramanico says he was looking forward to receiving the money, but Nutter told us it's already been paid, and he told Caramanico to make sure to clear that up in his next newsletter.

We caught up with Nutter in the atrium of City Hall where Philadelphia Style magazine celebrated its relaunch. Philadelphia Soul owner Jon Bon Jovi, who graces the mag's cover, was there briefly and snuck out avoiding reporters and photographers because one of his kids was singing somewhere, we were told. Local actor Jarrod Spector, who's on Broadway in "Jersey Boys," performed.
Also in attendance were NBC 10's

Glenn "Hurricane" Schwartz, Bill Henley and Dawn Timmeney; CBS 3's Doug Kammerer; Fox 29's Jennaphr Frederick; 102.9 WMGK's John DeBella; Chickie's & Pete's owner Pete Ciarrocchi, and attorney Chuck Peruto. So was Dana Spain-Smith, who sold the magazine to New Yorker Jason Binn's Niche Media in February. Binn looks forward to promoting more events in the city.
Nutter had earlier been at a fundraiser for Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown. State Sen. Vincent Hughes and state Rep. Tony Payton Jr. were part of the event, hosted by radio DJ Doug Henderson Jr.

JON Bon Jovi loves when "Living on a Prayer" and "Wanted: Dead or Alive" blast on the radio - but doesn't feel the same about the tracks on his 1985 album, "7800 Degrees Fahrenheit," like "Tokyo Road" or "Secret Dreams." Bon Jovi told Philadelphia Style magazine that if one album makes him wince, it's "Fahrenheit," adding, "My whole second album I try to avoid. Philly: Mr. Gotham Buys A 215 Mag And An Alt-Weekly Editor Tries Comic Books

Alright. We have three major purchases/job changes in Philadelphia to cover today, all of which have to do with the New York media scene. Yeah people, the incestuous world of media hirings connects the scrapple-lovin', Santa Claus-peltin' Philadelphians and the high-falutin' New Yorkers in ways you can't even imagine.

Media move 1: Gotham and LA Confidential publisher Jason Binn has purchased Philly Style magazine. The usually-on-mark Keith J. Kelly notes that more than anything else, Binn & Co. just want to go after rival chain Modern Luxury (Angeleo/CS). A lot.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, current owner Dana Spain-Smith decided to sell the mag "because she wishes to devote her time and energy to her pet charity, Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society."

Spain-Smith is the scion to a 99 cent store fortune. Really.
Meanwhile, Style is aimed at Philadelphia's Main Line-and-Center City elite: Per Binn, "readers with household incomes of $250,000-plus and $1 million in liquid assets, as well as homes worth $1 million-plus."

Media move 2: The editor of well-respected alternative newsweekly Philadelphia City Paper is stepping down in a few weeks... to write an X-Men spinoff for Marvel Comics. Duane Swierczynski was recently named as the writer of Marvel's Cable title and is also planning to return to a well regarded mystery writing career — his newest novel, The Blonde, was just released by St. Martin's Minatour. According to the Philadelphia Daily News, current senior editor Brian
Howard is going to be his replacement.

Media move 3: Philadelphia Inquirer Image editor (note: Image = the downsized version of the Philadelphia Inquirer Magazine in this post-web journalism world) Chris Gray has announced that she's leaving the paper to become USA Today's new Travel editor. Gray has hada long-time yen for travel writing and the USA Today gig seems like it will be up her alley. As of late, USA Today has been bulking up their travel content.
